Art work made by 5th graders
Principal's Corner Dear Bierbaum Families,
We hope everyone had a great summer and is getting ready for the new school year!
Your new teachers are excited to meet you and the classrooms and hallways are clean and shiny! Mr. Booker and I are looking forward to seeing you very soon. You are going to learn so many new things this year! We are excited to have everyone from TEAM BIERBAUM back on August 18! We are all going to work to "Step up to the plate!" with our new school year baseball theme. We will set goals for ourselves and then challenge each other to meet those goals. Remember- everyone is an important member of our TEAM here at Bierbaum! Can you remember our daily pledge? Here it is:
"I am a member of Team Bierbaum. This means I believe in myself and will do my best at all times. I will act in a way that shows I care about myself and others. I will make today the very best I can. I am proud to be a WINNER on Team Bierbaum!"
Looking forward to seeing you soon! Remember - you can drop off your supplies at school on Friday, August 13 from 9 a.m.-noon if you don't want to bring them on the first day.
See you soon! |

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS Volunteering Opportunities for 2008/2009 school year
There are many volunteer opportunities throughout the year that allow you to get involved in your child’s school. You can volunteer at class parties or to sell tickets at Chili Night Out or to chair a booth at the school picnic. There are also regular weekly volunteer opportunities for those who have the time. Two of our regular opportunities are:
Publishing Center: Teachers place their orders in a file folder in the school office. Projects may include cutting out 40 elf hats, laminating a child’s artwork or sorting pages in a child’s school-year scrapbook. You can come in any day of the school week and any time during the school day to go through the file folder to see what needs to be done. You can work as little or as much as you want. For more information, contact Melissa Lambert at cloudsofviolets@charter.net
Wednesday Envelopes: Every Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, volunteers collate school news and notes and place the papers in envelopes that go home with our children on Wednesday afternoons. The task takes about 1.5 hours each of the two days. The more volunteers we have, however, the quicker it goes. For more information, contact Marie Dilg at mtdilg@sbcglobal.net. |

From the Nurse FROM THE NURSE……….
February is dental health month. Ideally, all kindergarten children should have already seen a dentist. Even though they only have their baby teeth, good dental hygiene can ensure that permanent teeth come in without problems or can identify any problems that could arise with those permanent teeth. Teeth not only assist us in eating and chewing but they assist us with talking and smiling. Dental visits are recommended every 6 months. I do have a list of dentists in our area-some with sliding scale pay plans. Feel free to contact me if you need any assistance.
Brushing and visiting the dentist are not the only things that can promote healthy teeth. Limiting candy, soda, excessive sugars and fast food will help. Soda, tea and coffee are known to stain teeth. Reading food labels can assist you in making good food choices. If the first ingredient listed is sugar or high fructose corn syrup then avoid these foods or use in moderation. Help your children LOVE their teeth not only in February but every month of the year.
I wanted to include some basic first aid for accidents involving teeth. For loss of primary or “baby” teeth there is nothing that needs to be done. They will naturally be replaced by permanent teeth. Do not try to put the tooth back in the socket. This can cause injury to the developing permanent tooth bud.
If a permanent tooth is knocked out there are several things to remember:
- Do not touch the root, handle by crown only.
- Rinse off the tooth only if there is dirt covering it. Do not scrub tooth.
- Do attempt to place tooth back into the socket gently and hold it there.
- If unable to put back in place then place tooth in milk or water.
- The tooth should not be allowed to dry. Don’t wrap in tissue or cloth.
- Adults and older children, if calm, can hold the tooth within in the cheeks inside the mouth while traveling to the dentist.
- Take child to dentist or emergency room-Time is the most important variable affecting saving the tooth.
We only get one set of teeth so help your children learn healthy habits and help them take care of their teeth!!!
