2009 End of Year

Dear Bierbaum Parents,

Oh, what a wonderful year this has been! I can’t believe it’s my last newsletter for this year! We really have much to be thankful for and have accomplished many terrific things at Bierbaum. The following is a list of “celebrations” from 08-09!

-addition of some awesome new staff members!
-an amazing PTO who ran many successful fundraisers and events to help our school!
-smooth transition of new leadership J
-a caring and friendly school climate with a strong focus on helping our kids develop good character
-new whiteboards, projectors, and other great technology
-the addition of an outdoor classroom
-improved Tungsten scores and great work getting ready and taking the MAP tests
-beginning the Study Island tutoring program
-very successful music concerts
-amazing artwork on the walls and throughout the building
-highest number of Reading Counts Century Club members
-passed Proposition T in the district- yea! (to restore money for textbooks and tutoring for next year!)
-great Reading and Math Mania Nights
-improved student behaviors and less discipline incidents
-the TEAM BIERBAUM theme with MVP’s, teacher All-Stars, and our morning Bierbaum pledge
-a wonderful SCHOOL PICNIC!
-lots of enthusiasm and school spirit
-raised a lot of money for charities and people in need (thanks to Student Council)
-formed an amazing partnership as students, teachers, parents, and community to help our kids become their very BEST!

And there is much more! These are just some of the things the teachers and I are most proud of! Believe it or not, we are already looking ahead and planning for next year! I want to share with you the GOALS we have developed for the 09-10 school year:

1. To improve student achievement by using data and assessment to guide instruction and common planning among grade level teams.

2. To develop and implement “Universal” rules and procedures in our classrooms, among grade levels, and in our school.

3. To develop and implement an intentional and purposeful Character Education program in classrooms, in our school, and at home.

4. To provide better and more effective communication with families and the community.

We hope you will continue to partner with us in meeting and exceeding our goals!
A few other announcements:

Thank you so much to all of our PTO Board and members for how much work you have done this year! Words cannot express how important your work is to us!

Thank you so much to all of our volunteers this year- and most recently our Peace Museum volunteers who helped run the exhibits! It was a great two days!

We held our annual SWITCH DAY on the 13th so students have an idea what their class will be like for next year. We always hesitate to do this in case something changes over the summer, but we decided it’s worth it to put students’ (and parents’) minds at ease!

Everyone have a wonderful summer vacation and enjoy your kiddos! We look forward to seeing everyone in August!! Stay safe and remember to READ, READ, READ!!

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS

Volunteering Opportunities for 2008/2009 school year

There are many volunteer opportunities throughout the year that allow you to get involved in your child’s school. You can volunteer at class parties or to sell tickets at Chili Night Out or to chair a booth at the school picnic. There are also regular weekly volunteer opportunities for those who have the time. Two of our regular opportunities are:

Publishing Center: Teachers place their orders in a file folder in the school office. Projects may include cutting out 40 elf hats, laminating a child’s artwork or sorting pages in a child’s school-year scrapbook. You can come in any day of the school week and any time during the school day to go through the file folder to see what needs to be done. You can work as little or as much as you want. For more information, contact Melissa Lambert at cloudsofviolets@charter.net

Wednesday Envelopes: Every Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, volunteers collate school news and notes and place the papers in envelopes that go home with our children on Wednesday afternoons. The task takes about 1.5 hours each of the two days. The more volunteers we have, however, the quicker it goes. For more information, contact Marie Dilg at mtdilg@sbcglobal.net.

From the Nurse

The days are getting longer and the sun is getting hotter. It is that time to begin applying sunscreen regularly to your child when they are outside. I wanted to provide some important information on sunscreen usage.

* Apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to going outside. This allows the sunscreen to soak in.
* Use enough to evenly apply to entire body. In this case more is better than not enough. About the size of your child’s hand should be enough to cover their body. As they grow so does the amount.
* Remember the back of neck, ears, face, feet and backs of arms and legs
* Reapply at least every 2 hours, especially if swimming and sweating.
* Choose a sunscreen that is broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection, water resistant, hypoallergenic and fragrance free.
* SPF factor of at least 15-30
* Use on cloudy days as well as sunny days.
* Choose a form of sunscreen you will be most comfortable using-gels, lotions, spray, sticks are all available forms.
* Try to avoid sun exposure between 10am and 4pm. The rays are the during that time.
